Week 6: Throwing away items
Hello and welcome to another devlog. I've mainly spent this week working on some of the features for the inventory system as well as slowly starting to building out the world with a couple new locations.
Starting with the inventory, as highlighted in last week's devlog, my main focus has been getting a lot of the essential functionality built for it. I want my inventory to be dynamic, allowing players to do easily things such as increase it's size, move items around or destroy item's they no longer need, as in my opinion, a clunky inventory system can really impact the appeal of a game. It shouldn't be a challenge to navigate and find something. So keeping this in mind, I've added a menu that displays dynamically when right clicking an item. It's though this that you'll be able to use, destroy and split stacks of items.
Then when destroying an stack of items, the following pop-up appears on screen allowing you to pick the amount that you'd like to remove from your inventory using the plus and minus buttons.
Next I'm going to add the functionality to drag items and drop them into another slot within your inventory, as well as tooltips that display when hovering over items in your inventory. These will display information dynamically about the item such as it's name, description, the type of item it is (Junk, Equipment, Quest Item etc), the stats attached to the item if it is equipment, and how much it can be sold to a vendor for.
When it comes to the world, I've started to add the first components of some new locations so I can get a feel for how I want the flow of the map and questing experience to feel. In the image below you can see an overview of how the map is looking currently in the Unreal editor. I'm planning for the player to start in the ruins of a recently destroyed village, before moving on to the surrounding farm land. It'll be these areas on the left side of the map which set up the story around how you are a newly arisen undead soldier, part of an army tasked with laying siege too and capturing the sprawling city that can be found before you.
Well that's all I've been working on this week, hopefully you've enjoyed the devlog and next week's should include another deep-dive into the different functionalities that make up my inventory system.
